Worthing Promenade

Looking towards Splash Point and the way to Brighton.

A quiet mid-week afternoon, plenty of space for everyone. It gets much busier here when the fair comes to town, or on a hot sunny weekend.

One wide expanse of empty Promenade, one busy narrow road with lots of parked cars. Which would you prefer to cycle on?

Here you can see the shared-use signs on Worthing Promenade outside the entrance to the Pier. The famous Dome Cinema can be seen in the background: this really is Worthing!

The yellow lines aren’t a cycle lane (although they mark a useful route to get to some cycle parking stands from the Prom) they’re a guide for wheelchairs as to the route to the theatre that avoids the steps.

Here you can see the western end of the old “tramline” cycle lane along the Promenade.

While the “NO CYCLING” markings have been blacked out, you are still not officially allowed to ride here – at least according to the signs (I’m not sure what the bye-law says).

The end of the new shared-use Promenade route is now further east, meaning that it’s even more difficult than before to join the Promenade on a bike at this end!

You can just see a band of tactile paving across the end of the shared part of the Prom going from a gap in the sea wall to a black rubbish bin.
