The Prom or the Road?

One wide expanse of empty Promenade, one busy narrow road with lots of parked cars. Which would you prefer to cycle on? The Prom or the Road?

Cycling allowed on Worthing Prom!

Here you can see the shared-use signs on Worthing Promenade outside the entrance to the Pier. The famous Dome Cinema can be seen in the background: this really is Worthing!

The yellow lines aren’t a cycle lane (although they mark a useful route to get to some cycle parking stands from the Prom) they’re a guide for wheelchairs as to the route to the theatre that avoids the steps.

Remains of the old cycle lane

Here you can see the western end of the old “tramline” cycle lane along the Promenade.

While the “NO CYCLING” markings have been blacked out, you are still not officially allowed to ride here – at least according to the signs (I’m not sure what the bye-law says).

The end of the new shared-use Promenade route is now further east, meaning that it’s even more difficult than before to join the Promenade on a bike at this end!

You can just see a band of tactile paving across the end of the shared part of the Prom going from a gap in the sea wall to a black rubbish bin.

Please could we cycle along here?

This shows the footpath from the western end of the Worthing Promenade leading to Sea Lane Café.

On one side is shingle and then some beach huts, on the other a hedge. Plenty of space to widen the path quite a bit, and allow shared-used from Worthing all the way to the Sea Lane Café. This would be a very popular ride!

The new guard fence at Shopsdam road, to try to prevent pedestrians walking out into the path of cyclists. Nice to see that it has a white reflective strip on it’s outer edge. New guard fence at Sailing Club, looking west
