Worthing BC Cabinet approves Shared-use Trial & New Bye-Laws

Worthing Borough Council's cabinet last night accepted council officers' recommendations to go ahead with the trial of shared use cycling on the Prom and the new bye-laws needed to allow it happen. Although the council's most recent consultation showed more support for a segregated cycle lane, council officers (and cabinet) supported the view that the evidence favours shared use space as a safer option. Suggestions about restricted hours and speed limits were rejected. The full council now has to agree the new bye-laws: the earliest that can happen is 22nd May. The Department for Communities and Local Government then have to run a further one month public consultation before the bye-laws are finally enacted. So we might be looking at July / August.
